Gargos, the main villain of Killer Instinct, is now available as a playable character. He was announced yesterday by developer Iron Galaxy and is available with patch(3.1.5).

Gargos served as the final boss in prior Killer Instinct entries, so it’s only fitting that he should make a return in the series. Shedding his iconic red skin for a more modern look, the Shadow Lord Gargos has found his way to this reboot. Also included in this patch are alterations to the gaming balance as well as some major bug fixes.

Gargos had actually been shown off a month prior by developer Iron Galaxy, who let livestream viewers get a good glimpse of the character in action during a half-hour long streaming session. The warlord was initially confirmed during the Season 3 launch trailer, alongside other series veterans like Kim Wu.

Gargos has various ranged attacks making him an advanced but formidable zoning adversary. He’s also capable of shutting players down while above the ground, using air grabs and his wings for additional jumps while airborne.

Perhaps the most insane feature of Gargos is his minion gameplay. He can summon two demonic minions (which curiously resemble Pain and Panic from Disney’s Hercules movie…), who both have their own moves, A.I. commands, and even specials. Gargos can interact with his minions in a number of ways, using them to block projectiles and continue combos. He can even devour his minions to gain Instinct meter.

While Gargos has a ton of capabilities, mastering them proficiently will require patience and investment. Iron Galaxy noted in the stream that the minions might seem powerful, but in reality, they’ll die very quickly if summoned at the wrong time.

Gargos will also be available with a retro skin to mimic his Killer Instinct 2 appearance, and carries some incredible looking accessories and colors — including a frankly horrifying nightmare clown costume.

If you’d like to find out what Gargos is capable of in more detail, Killer Instinct developers Iron Galaxy hosted a full reveal stream you can check out over here.

Killer Instinct is available now for free on Xbox One and the Windows 10 Store, and your purchases and progress roam between devices via your Microsoft Account.

The official website for the game says that an elephant-in-the-room character announcement is poised for June, when a brand new fighter will be fully revealed. Unlike the long-awaited inclusion of Gargos, June and July’s new characters will receive no teaser videos or hints, so it looks like gamers will kept in the dark until those characters are added – though one may have been leaked already, in the form of the aforementioned Locust General.
